problems with dodgy sign ups

looks like people (like you and duff) have been adding in friends by some clever hacks (creating temporary fictitious projects etc) but then removing them again before the friends sign up. that is causing errors (because I was depending on those things for the invite info...)

We should probably make it easier to invite friends (or anyone to sign up) so no one needs to do those hacks!
